Steve McCrea
I've traveled to over 45 countries and I've almost three years in other countries.  What can we learn from each other?

I've developed a pronunciation system called "It Sounds Like" and I hope people will avoid using IPA (backwards C, a+e, upside-down V).  Let's talk!   Write to freeEnglishLessons@gmail.com.   My Orkut and Facebook accounts are both linked to FreeEnglishLessons@gmail.com.

I
am a teacher in a school in Fort Lauderdale.

I have written some articles for Teacher Training -- look for them here.
http://www.VisualAndActive.com is my training website:  YES, you can hire my colleagues and we can prepare an EXCELLENT long-term training program for teachers.

Students can ask teachers to use these methods:  More “student talk” and less “teacher talk”. ESL classes should be student-centered, giving students an opportunity to interact with each other in pairs, in small groups, and with the teacher.
Ask the teacher to use lots of visuals and lots of gestures.  The students learn best when they have many cues to meaning.
__ Look for reading, writing, listening and speaking to be integrated systematically into every ESL lesson.
__ Look for wait time.  The ESL teacher should wait patiently for a student to answer verbally. "Wait time" in the ESL class is much longer than in a regular classroom of native speakers.. Remember that some students translate in their heads before they speak.
__ TPR (Total Physical Response)  When the teacher gives commands, the students give a physical response.  If the lesson is about learning the parts of the body, the teacher may ask students to touch their heads, raise their hands, show their thumbs, etc.
Pronunciation practice.
__ Ask the teacher to write what she is saying so that students make the connection between spoken words and their written form.
What you should not see:
__ Students doing worksheets that seem unrelated to anything they have done before.
__ Students sitting inactively while the teacher talks.
__ Teachers giving spelling tests.  While spelling is important, students must learn the words and their meanings before giving attention to the discrete aspects of language.
In summary, the ESL class should be a lively environment where students have opportunities to learn the English language in increments appropriate to what they already know.
